The Comback of Yellow Gold

There has been a significant increase in yellow gold sales in our custom bridal jewelry business  over the past year,  from 32% to 56%, suggests a substantial shift in customer preference within our specific market. While it's impossible to definitively say if this exact percentage change mirrors a nationwide trend without comprehensive sales data from numerous jewelers across the US, there are indicators suggesting a broader movement away from white gold and towards yellow gold.

Here's why our store's experience might reflect a larger trend:

The Resurgence of Yellow Gold:

  • Fashion Cycles: Fashion trends are cyclical. Yellow gold, a classic and timeless choice, has been gaining popularity again after a long period of white metal dominance. The original shift from white gold to yellow gold occurred in the mid 1970’s.  The current resurgence of yellow gold is evident in fashion jewelry and is now influencing bridal choices.
  • Vintage and Classic Styles: There's a growing appreciation for vintage-inspired and classic bridal aesthetics, where yellow gold naturally fits.
  • Warmth and Tone: Many clients are finding yellow gold complements their skin tones beautifully, offering a warmer and richer look.
  • Celebrity Influence: Celebrities and influencers often drive trends, and the increased visibility of yellow gold jewelry on prominent figures can impact consumer preferences.

Potential Factors Contributing to the Decline of White Gold:

  • Maintenance: White gold's rhodium plating, which gives it its bright white sheen, wears off over time and requires periodic re-plating. This ongoing maintenance and cost can be a deterrent for some buyers.
  • Hypoallergenic Concerns: While many white gold alloys use nickel, a common allergen, even nickel-free white gold might contain other metals that cause sensitivity in some individuals. Yellow gold, especially higher karat options, is generally considered more hypoallergenic.
  • Perceived Value: While both are precious metals, some consumers might perceive the rich color of yellow gold as more traditionally "gold" and thus of higher inherent value.
  • Diamond Appearance: While white gold enhances the brilliance of higher color grade diamonds, some prefer the warmer contrast that yellow gold provides, especially for diamonds with slightly lower color grades.

Evidence of a Potential Nationwide Shift:

  • Industry Reports: Some reports within the jewelry industry have noted a decrease in the popularity of white gold engagement ring settings in recent years, although specific nationwide sales percentage shifts are not always readily available.
  • Market Observations: Anecdotal evidence from jewelers and fashion publications suggests a growing demand for yellow gold in various jewelry categories, including bridal.
  • Social Media and Trends: Online platforms and social media often showcase emerging trends, and there's been a noticeable increase in the visibility and discussion around yellow gold bridal jewelry.

However, it's important to consider that:

  • Regional Differences: Jewelry preferences can vary geographically within the US. What's popular in one region might differ in another.
  • Store-Specific Factors: Our store's unique operation, only making our client’s designs, accelerate the trend because we don’t have showcases and ready made stock, so we can react faster to industry trends.

In conclusion, while our store's dramatic shift from white gold to other metals might be more pronounced than the national average, it likely reflects a broader trend in the US where yellow gold is regaining popularity in bridal jewelry.
